The Recreation Centers of Sun City,
Inc. under new management has undergone an initial restructuring process
which was approved by the Board of Directors this week. “I have been
asking questions since I arrived on January 2,” said RCSC General
Manager Jan Ek, “and it has become very apparent in the answers I have
received that some changes need to occur and while change is never easy,
it is inevitable.”
Some of the questions Ms. Ek has been
asking involved succession planning, the purpose of the divisions that
have been created, efficiencies in the current mode of operations and
utilization of employee talents and skills. She feels strongly that it
is in the best interest of RCSC to eliminate the divisions that have
created the “we” “they” mentality that doesn’t afford RCSC the
opportunity to operate with the effectiveness of an organization that
functions as a whole. “Division means to divide,” she explains. “We
cannot be operating at our ultimate efficiency if we are divided.”
Ms. Ek admits that she, herself, may
not have been given this opportunity if succession planning had already
been in place. As a strong proponent of such a plan, she believes that
by promoting from within not only brings great depth in a team; it also
creates job satisfaction, which reduces turnover, which saves money.
“While we have not been able to put the entire succession plan in place
yet,” Jan says with a smile, “I am very pleased to announce that Jim
Wellman has been named the new Assistant General Manager.”
In the process of the volunteer Board
of Directors operating as the General Manager previously, a Senior
Manager’s structure was created whereby four divisions, Golf Operations,
Center Operations, Human Resources and Finance and Administration, all
reported directly to them. Upon the initiation of the General Manager,
these four Senior Managers reported directly to her. “The difficult
thing about my job,” explains Ms. Ek, “is that sometimes you have to
make difficult decisions that you believe are in the company’s best
interest, even though it affects people negatively in your organization
that you wish was not the case.” Ms. Ek is referring to the elimination
of the position of Sr. Manager of Finance and Administration held by
Mark Nellis.
The General Manager proposed
separation of duties, while maintaining financial accountability within
the organization, are more about the talents and skills of the teams
rather than divisions. “We have an extremely talented and skilled team
under Jim Wellman’s direction that maintains the infrastructure of all
of our centers,” she explains. “Now they will maintain all the
infrastructure of RCSC, not just the centers.” The process of creating a
structure regarding duties, skills and talents is that it not only
capitalizes on efficiencies, but it also capitalizes on quality and
provides an opportunity to create training and material standardization
which brings additional cost savings and increased customer
satisfaction.
“While all the pieces of this puzzle
have not been put into place yet,” exclaims Ms. Ek, “I am confident that
as a team, we can continue to create win-win situations for all
concerned.”
