Sundial Center Update
The Recreation
Centers of Sun City, Inc. is moving forward with plans to repair Sundial
Recreation Center after the center’s roof collapsed last June. RCSC
Senior Manager of Centers Operations Jim Wellman reports that the
architects hired to design the rebuild are finishing the new building
plans and plan to file a building permit with Maricopa County the week
of February 12.
RCSC has still not received a decision
from the insurance company about its claim for the roof failure, but
will proceed with the rebuild. A letter was recently sent by RCSC to the
insurance company demanding information on the status of the claim.
RCSC is asking Maricopa County to
expedite the permit process due to the hardship facing Sun City
residents with the lack of an indoor pool facility. The building
contractor for the project has already been hired, so work can commence
immediately once the permit has been approved by the County.
Wellman noted that the rebuilding
process has actually moved along very quickly considering the amount of
planning required for a project of this size. Sundial has been closed
since June 19, so RCSC has only been planning the rebuild for
approximately 8 months, in contrast to the three years required for the
recent Bell Center renovation. “Contrary to the Bell project, where we
continued to operate while planning was taking place behind the scenes,”
Wellman said, “with Sundial we have had to expedite this phase
considerably because the center is already closed.”
“There is no one on the Board or on
the [RCSC] staff who wouldn’t love to have Sundial re-opened,” said RCSC
General Manager Jan Ek. “Residents just have to trust that we are
working on it daily and moving through the process as quickly as
possible and will continue to do so.”
