Area Near North Golf Course Receives Facelift

A strip of land off 107th Ave. in Sun City, part of the North Golf Course, is finally receiving a much-needed renovation thanks to an anonymous donor and fundraising efforts by the North Golf Course Green Committee. The area, located across 107th Ave. from the North Pro Shop, had been paved with asphalt since the early days of Sun City and had long been considered an eyesore by many Sun City golfers and area residents. The asphalt has been removed and the area is now being landscaped with plants, grass and decorative rock.

Louise Doughty, who served as Beautification Chairman on the North Green Committee for 10 years, has continually worked to renovate the area. “You used to see piles of debris and commercial trucks parked there,” Ms. Doughty said. “It just never did add anything to the North course.” Her wish to landscape the area was fulfilled in February 2007, when an anonymous donor gave $5,000 to the RCSC Golf Advisory Committee. Ms. Doughty and the North Green Committee jumped at the opportunity and made a case that the money should go to North. The Advisory Committee, which includes representatives from each of the RCSC golf courses, approved North’s request and the North Green Committee launched a campaign to raise the additional funds that would be needed to complete the project. According to current Beautification Chairman Mary Cooper, the fundraising efforts included 50/50 raffles held at ladies’ luncheons and a “closest to the pin” contest for the men. To date the North Green Committee has raised over $5,000 for the project, which is nearing completion.

“This [renovation] isn’t just for the North course,” noted Ms. Cooper. “[The area] is on a main thoroughfare that everyone drives down, near shopping centers and right in the middle of everything. This is an upgrade for all of Sun City.”

The funds from the Golf Advisory and North Green Committees have gone towards materials for the project; RCSC has only provided the labor. North Golf Course Superintendent Chuck Manning, RCSC Grounds Maintenance Manager Rich Widdows and their respective staffs have done the majority of the labor on the renovation. The asphalt in the area was removed earlier this summer and landscaping and sod were installed. The last step in the process will be to place landscaping rock. “It’s really helping beautify Sun City,” said Mr. Manning.

Work on the project is expected to be completed shortly, although the North Green Committee is still in the process of raising funds to finish the project. Interested potential donors are invited to contact Mary Cooper at 875-2836 for more information.
