The Recreation
Centers of Sun City, Inc. has installed new steel security fencing at
the Mountain View Recreation Center in order to eliminate increased
theft activity that has recently occurred at the facility.
The center, which until now had little
or no exterior protection, has had ongoing security problems, primarily
with break-ins to the pool equipment area and maintenance building. An
alarm system was installed in the area at the end of 2006, but thefts
continue. Steel fences and gates have been installed around the
perimeter of the center and the main entrance to the pool area has been
enclosed with a storefront-type wall and lockable door. The east
boundary of the property is currently separated from a group of
condominiums by a four- to five-foot high brick wall, but RCSC Assistant
General Manager Jim Wellman noted that if this lack of wall height
becomes a concern, the RCSC will revisit the issue using an upgrade to
the site’s electronic security system.
According to Mr. Wellman, RCSC
examined several options for the fencing, including block walls, chain
link and steel. The steel fences were a more affordable and
aesthetically appropriate option, he said.
Mr. Wellman reported that RCSC is
currently examining security at all its facilities. Many of the
recreation centers are more enclosed and therefore more secure, but
Mountain View is more of an open-air facility, which may be more
inviting to potential thieves.
“Unfortunately Sun City is no longer
the isolated neighborhood it once was,” Mr. Wellman said. “It’s still a
great neighborhood, but just as homeowners must lock up their homes to
keep them secure, RCSC must begin securing its facilities as well.”
RCSC Board of Directors President
Denny Nichols added that clubs and those that use the center will also
benefit from the increased security. “RCSC’s chartered clubs at Mountain
View and everyone who uses the center can feel secure knowing that their
equipment and belongings are more protected now,” he said.
