Swimming
Pool at Oakmont Center to Become Salt Water Pool
The
swimming pool at the Recreation Centers of Sun City, Inc.’s Oakmont
Recreation Center is set to become RCSC’s first salt water pool. A salt
water chlorination system that turns the salt in the pool water into
chlorine is scheduled to be installed, replacing the traditional
practice of adding chlorine to sanitize the pool water.
Residential
salt water pools have been popular for some time now but with recent
equipment improvements, designed for larger pools, the commercial market
is beginning to pick up speed.
Since salt
(sodium chloride) is made up of sodium and chlorine, a salt water
chlorination system essentially removes the chloride (chlorine) molecule
from the sodium molecule and uses the chlorine to disinfect the pool
water. The salt water chlorination system will significantly reduce the
amount of liquid chlorine needed to maintain proper chemical balance and
may at times entirely eliminate the need to add liquid chlorine to the
pool water.
The salt
water will create a much more comfortable swimming experience, says RCSC
Assistant General Manager Jim Wellman. The salinity of a salt water pool
is roughly the same as a human tear, so the water will feel softer and
be much gentler on swimmers’ skin, hair and eyes, as well as their
swimwear.
“This is a
win-win-win situation,” added Oakmont Center Property Supervisor Richard
Hoffman.
According
to Mr. Wellman, the approximate cost for equipment installation and the
salt necessary to activate the system is $4,500.
The pool
will remain open during the transition, which is expected to be complete
during the week of June 4.
